Indonesian Flavours & Dirty Ducks: Bebek Bengil, Ubud

We don’t know about you, but one of the reasons we love to travel is so that we can try ALL the local cuisine. Having asked for recommendations on where to go to eat local cuisine in Ubud, Bali, we were directed to Bebek Bengil (a.k.a. Dirty Duck Diner) for lunch.

Opened in 1990, this restaurant have a pretty amusing story as to how they got their name. They thought long and hard about it, but couldn’t seem to find the right Balinese name that translated well into English as well. One morning, during a tropical monsoon, a flock of ducks came in to the restaurant from the rice field across the road. They crossed the new flooring and tables, leaving muddy footprints behind them, and it was these first guests that inspired the name!

Filling our life with colourful food is a must, so when the Rice Paper Rolls were served, we were super happy.

For IDR 55,000 we had three gorgeously stuffed veggie spring rolls served with a chill sauce that packed quite the punch!

For our mains, we couldn’t not try the restaurant classic:  a full plate of steamed rice with Balinese specialties (vegetables, chicken satay, prawn crackers, boiled egg) and a crispy duck leg to finish it all off.

We cant get enough of the beautiful plating and incredible flavours of Indonesian dishes we’ve been able to try during the past week. This Ayam Suir Bali was a decadent plate of shredded chicken served with a cone of yellow rice. The spices throughout the dish had a real kick to them that we only wish we could replicate when back home!⠀
