Over the past few years, I’ve noticed more and more people asking how I’ve been working to improve my food photography ever since I started working for lifestyle media brands and as a freelance content and communications consultant.

The short answer? A lot of Google searches, online courses, and on-the-job practice!

My passion for food photography started when I moved to China for work. I fell completely in love with the diverse culinary scene that was far from what I ever imagined it would be. I started documenting what I had the fortune of trying every week and sharing those images with friends and family. Soon, it became an obsession. Every weekend/month, I would set out to explore a new neighbourhood, a new town, a new city, fully focused on trying all the local delicacies that were native to that particular area of the country – who knew Chinese food was so diverse?! All I had known growing up was the Cantonese / Guangdong style of Chinese food that was popular throughout the UK (and what I had known having spent my formative years in Hong Kong.

When I moved to Shanghai, I joined one of the largest expat media companies in the country as a Digital Content Manager – and that’s when I fell into covering the latest new restaurant and bar openings throughout the city. However, I had to quickly learn how to capture the food and drinks I was writing about, as I didn’t always have access to a photographer who could accompany me.

Frankly, I sucked at it. My photos were poorly compositioned, poorly-lit (most of the time I was shooting in restaurants at dinner time, and had no idea that things like portable lights existed), and honestly, I felt like I didn’t really know what I was doing. And yet, I loved every second of it and couldn’t wait to learn how to improve my pictures.

Out of the many online courses I tried, Foodtography School is one that really stuck with me.

Who is Foodtography School for?

Whether you’re new to the world of food photography or have been practising for a while like I had, the courses provides advice and insight that will help push your photographs to the next level. What I Learned

  1. Fundamentals of Photography: Covering everything from the history of photography and elements to consider to the basics of using your DSLR.

  2. Composition: Covers core composition principles, capturing movement in your photographs effectively and how to create dynamic images using texture and layering.

  3. Light and Colour: Ever wondered how light and colour can affect your photographs? You’ll find out in this unit, alongside common lighting mistakes! I was definitely guilty of committing a few of these…

  4. Branding: Get the low down on finding your unique visual voice and style and why branding is important. It’s all about learning to stand out from the competition.

  5. Editing: Turn great photographs into G.R.E.A.T. photographs - how you edit your photos makes all the difference, and this unit covers everything to do with that.

  6. Social Media: Whether you’ve got the skills or not when it comes to marketing yourself on social media, there’s no harm in learning a few tips and tricks from others, or giving your social media strategy a complete overhaul with the help of this unit.

  7. Business and Marketing: This is where you learn all about how to market yourself as a food photographer, how to build a relationship with brands and start earning money!

While my focus is mainly on restaurant photography, the tips and insight I gained throughout this course helped me level up core photography fundamentals (relating to food too) that really helped. So, if you’re looking to pick up a new skill – be it for business or pleasure, I would highly recommend giving Foodtography School a chance to help you level up the quality of your photographs!
